FAN FRIDAY FEATURED BUILD BY BLAIN SCHMIDT
A Fan Freak’intastic Friday here, and Blain’s build is here to make your Friday even more enjoyable.
BLAIN’S BUILD INFO:
The RatSkull started life as a Traxxas Funny car rolling chassis that was purchased for a Pro Stock Drag car build that turned Rat Rod due to my obsession with Rat Rods needing an RC presence. I gutted the chassis and chopped the front off, then flipped the front axle assembly to put the steering linkage out front. The rear cage had to be cut down significantly so the body could sit as low as possible and the rear axle was brought in a touch as well. The servo is a HiTec HS-82MG that is mounted vertically between the front suspension. I found the motor from a Maisto 1/18 scale Rat Rod Die Cast model which I disassembled to paint, reinforce and then reassembled. I used stainless tubing and a tubing bender to make the headers and fabbed frame mounts out of UHMW (Ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene), which I use a lot in RC fabrication due to its indestructibility. Then came the SKULL….my favorite part is the skull with steel spike Mohawk and red eyes that my son Zach helped me design and it covers the steering servo and servo arm. I love the way this came out and it really finishes off the front of the build. Wheels and tires on the front are Traxxas Weld funny car aluminum upgrades and the rear are Pro-Line 2.2 beadlocks and Pro-Line 2.2 Road Rage tires. Body is Pro-Line Rat Rod made for 1/16 E-Revo that is chopped and painted ultra-flat black with racing red stripes. Power comes from a Trinity 4.5 turn 550 can sensored brushless motor and Castle Mamba Max Pro ESC and its designed to run a 2s lipo battery. I have only had it up to about 30 mph at like 1/4 throttle and don’t plan to try for top speed any time soon. It does turn on a dime though and drives smooth and straight. I absolutely love the way it came together and can’t wait to start another full custom crazy build!
