FAN FRIDAY FEATURED BUILD BY FREDERICK MELLINI
Frederick’s build info;
I saw the new (at the time) Axial SCX10 Raw Builders Chassis at my local Hobby Shop (Walt’s Hobby Town, Syracuse NY) and immediately noticed that it would work great as a vintage/retro monster truck chassis from the1980’s. These were the trucks I remember as a kid growing up. The owners of these trucks built their own box frames, not the welded cage frames that you see today. With that in mind I know what truck I was going to build! I purchased the raw builder chassis, then I bought the Traxxas unpainted original Bigfoot Ford body with all the chrome accessories, Traxxas side mirrors from the TRX4 Ford Bronco body, and decals from MCI RACING out of Canada. The chassis was basically built per instructions with the addition of taller shocks (Axial SMT10 Monster Truck) Pro-line 2.6 Destroyer Monster Truck Tires and 2.6 rims. I did have to cut and alter the steering linkage to compensate for the taller stance. I am sure there are better or more improved ways for the steering such as an axle mounted servo etc., but this way does work and again I build more for show than go. 540 brushed motor, Traxxas ESC and steering servo, Flysky radio and receiver round out the electronics and it is powered by 2 cell lipo. Truck has good scale speed and characteristics with this set up…..brushless could be real fun!
