FAN FRIDAY FEATURED BUILD BY WAYNE SMITH

Wayne’s build info;

The Unimog build all started during the first lockdown in 2020. I’ve been into RC and models for my entire life including racing 1/5th touring cars and 1/24th Kyosho mini-z cars competitively too. I find Crawlers/crawling so relaxing, especially the building aspect. The Mogwai Unimog started life as a Traxxas TRX4 Sport. No fancy 2 speed or DIFF locks as fitting the Hobbywing Axe 1800kv it didn’t need it. The shell is an Axial UMG 6×6 double cab and I wanted a trail truck/Dakar type look to it. The cage is made from 4mm steel and I taught myself to Silver Solder to stick it all together. I’m an engineer by trade so I already had many of the skills required. Other parts it has are homemade stainless suspension links, Vitavon CNC Billet axles and brass, Vitavon Alloy skid plate, ess dual sound box, custom low COG battery tray, Savox 1210SG waterproof servo, Warn 8274 winch on the front and Warn 9500 winch on the rear so I don’t often get stuck. The bumpers were a real challenge to make as they are quite complex and are some of my favorite bits on it. I have experimented with different tyres and found these Louise CR Champ with Pro-Line dual stage foams are really good all round. We are mainly running on mud over here, but they don’t let me down on the rocks either. The interior was the first to arrive in the UK. I painted it with a driver who resembles myself and added a straightforward light kit. I’ve done a couple of cool crawling events with it, and it continues to bring me a lot of pleasure with all the positive comments I get.
